Art Therapy!

Words, drawings, photos, performance, all kinds of art can start a communication, and thus art therapy became our main focus in terms of activities. Each of our members develop one of their special interests into a language which they will use to communicate with the participants.

Right now, our art therapy workshops include five categories:

Improvisational Theater

Seeing collective difficulties and connecting individual strengths

Host: Yunyi Ji     Joan Hu

 2023

The activity aims at encouraging participants to see the impression of conformity in their lives and the pressure these rules and regulations bring. Participants will find a common language in free conversation, and through recitations they will be able to bring life's problems to light, find ways to improve them, and gain new perspectives. In the process, participants will feel the emotional connection between people. By encouraging participants to speak up about common problems and discuss them together, the workshop serves to soothe emotions and encourage people to get on with their lives.

Emotional Awareness

Host: Yunyi Ji

March 9, 2024

In our daily lives, we often hear phrases like “this person is too emotional” or “too sentimental” used to negatively evaluate someone. If emotions only lead to negative outcomes, why haven’t they been eliminated during human evolution? The answer is likely simple: emotions play a vital and irreplaceable role in our humanity. Participants will explore their emotions toward things around them, enhancing their self-perception. They will walk on the streets and enter parks, observing their surroundings. Each person will select one object to bring back to the classroom. Following guidance, participants will then write about this special object and share their thoughts at the end.

WeChat Input Boxes Repeatedly Deleted Texts, Withdrawn Messages, unspoken words ...... Have you ever had something you wanted to say to someone but never managed to get it out? Or maybe you wanted to issue a manifesto in front of the world? Shout it from the top of a mountain? Or stand on the beach and talk to yourself? Write it down in a letter. There's no limit to who you can write it to - it can be a person, an animal, a plant, a tree, or even an object.  Remember, you don't need to send the letter to the “recipient”, it will be kept by you. Therefore, you have unlimited freedom of expression.

A kaleidoscope of emotions

Improvisational Theater

Emotional Expression

Host: Joan Hu

June 16, 2024

Through improvisational theater, participants are able to act out the smallest experiences of their daily lives on a safe stage. Participants can choose to be either a story-sharer or a performer interpreting another person's experience. Ultimately, the interaction between these two roles is reflected in the theater performance; the sharer is able to feel the other's interpretation of his or her emotions, while the interpreter finds empathy in the sharer's story and looks back on their own experience from a different perspective. Prior to the launch of the improvisational theater format, participants will engage in a series of theater games designed to enliven the atmosphere, build group connections, and enable them to feel more comfortable expressing their true emotions in the final theater experience.

It Takes Two to Tango

Community Art Co-creation

Emotional Awareness

Host: Yunyi Ji   Joyce Li

October 16, 2024

Inspired by two creative writing workshops previously organized by the Green Bamboo Youth Complement Corner, this event aims to guide students in exploring emotional connections between people and objects. Extracting sentences and words from their works, we have created magnetic tiles, inviting passersby to craft poems using these words and share them on a blackboard. This art collaboration initiative seeks to help audiences sense the close ties between themselves and community spaces, offering an opportunity to understand and appreciate the inner worlds of young minds. It not only serves as a community art endeavor but also as an artistic collaboration with the participants of the writing workshops. Through the process of reimagining with the words they have created, a dialogue of hearts unfolds between the audience and the contributors.

Architecture

Visual, Space, and Body

Host: Zile Dong

October 20, 2024

In the city, we live within dense structures that serve as both embodiments of form and vessels of space. Accustomed to this environment, our aim with this event is to awaken everyone to the details of architecture and space that are often overlooked in our daily lives. For instance, considering buildings as human forms, which organs would correspond to these architectural masses? What kind of spaces do their bodies contain? How does this make you feel? Through visual design and expression, use photography to capture your observations, express your current emotions through drawing, and integrate what you see, think, and perceive while walking among buildings into your color palette design.

The child inside of us

Host: Joyce Li

October 27, 2024

Through this workshop, we would like to bring an imaginative activity into the community and invite everyone to experience it together. As we grow older, our childhood seems to be blurred in our memories - what did we like then? What were our dreams? Difficulties that made us cry at a young age now seem to be solved in a mature way; pain no longer brings tears to our eyes. Where have all the unshed tears gone? Do we still have the same children living in our hearts?

Relaxation of body and mind

Host: Joan Hu

November 23, 2024

In the classroom, in the confines of the classroom, we sit up straight. Before our desks, on our chairs, we maintain good posture. Even when it's time to sleep, our bodies are constrained by the size of the bed. Exercise brings a sense of relief because we open our chests and breathe deeply; because we stretch our arms and legs, running freely on the track field, doing pull-ups on the horizontal bar. However, exercise can also tire our nerves. This time, we will engage in some simple activities to promote both dynamic and static stretching and relaxation. We will explore postures not commonly assumed in daily life, actions not easily taken (e.g., lying on the floor). In the midst of demanding academic pursuits, we hope to give our nerves a rest, to empower and fortify ourselves. Alternatively, you can seize this opportunity to slow down, to be more present with yourself. Lastly, through storytelling, we will bring each other into this space, cherishing the present moment.

Interpersonal relationship

Host: Yunyi Ji

January 25, 2025

The workshop will guide participants in exploring interpersonal relationships in life. Through writing, it encourages participants to reflect on the influence of significant people in their lives and the meaning of interpersonal relationships. Participants will also be urged to ponder the emotions evoked by these relationships, whether positive or negative, and how they find themselves within these connections. "Outside the long pavilion, by the ancient road, the fragrant grass stretches under the azure sky..." The famous song "Farewell" sings of the heart-wrenching moments of separation from dear ones. The worries for seldom-seen loved ones, the unbearable yearning for friends, lovers... Does love make us more fragile? The renowned philosopher Hegel once said, "It is only through the recognition by another self-conscious individual that we can develop our own self-consciousness." What is the most impactful relationship in your life? It could be friendship, family, romantic love...
